We're coming up on tax season and if you're like most people, you're looking to take full advantage of numerous credits that were made available. One such credit is that for using Energy Star within your home to improve overall efficiency.

Did you buy Energy Star products during the 2010 tax year? Then you'll need to check out this set of guidelines from the EnergyStar.gov website. In the 2010 tax year, there were several different types of Energy Star appliances and products that qualified for a tax credit, which you can take advantage of while you work on your taxes in the coming weeks:

For biomass stoves, HVAC, insulation, roofs (metal & asphalt), water heaters, windows, and doors, you can get 30% of the cost up to $1,500, but it must have been installed by December 31, 2010. However, to get this tax credit, it must be within an existing home and your principle residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify.

For geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines (residential), and solar energy systems, you can receive a credit for 30% of the cost with no upper limit, but it applies to only existing homes and new construction. Both principle residences and second homes qualify. Rentals do not qualify.

Finally, if you have used fuel cells (residential fuel cell and microturbine system), you can be eligible for a credit for 30% of the cost, up to $500 per .5 kW of power capacity. Existing homes & new construction qualify. Must be your principal residence. Rentals and second homes do not qualify.

What can you do to keep your PTAC running smooth?

Many times we have customers asking us what they can do to keep their PTAC (Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners) units clean adding many years of service to their investment. Here are a few suggestions that can help performance and some advice on how to keep these units clean.

Keep the filter clean: Most PTAC units now have the durable mesh air filter with easy access. Check these once a month , they clean easily with warm water and liquid soap. Just let them air dry before you replace, this is where an extra set of air filters can come in handy.

Clean out dirt and debris: Slide the PTAC unit out, this will give you easy access to the wall sleeve and exterior grille. Many times dirt and debris will collect in this area that can effect air flow to the PTAC, clean out all obstructions that may plug the drain (if you have a drain kit attached). This is also a good time to insure all caulking is in place giving the the unit a secure fit.

Clean the coils and bottom pan: There are many methods and products to do this including using a vacuum, compressed air and steam cleaning (make sure all electrical components are covered for protection). There are a few commercial cleaners available as well. This is also a good time to check all blades, plastic shrouds and blower wheels for fungus and clean them as well.

Check all cords, plugs, outlets switches and knobs: Clean or replace as necessary.

Remove Obstructions: Items inside or outside too close to the air flow in and out of the PTAC should be moved. This may include trimming a bush or shrub on the outside or moving a piece of furniture on the inside.

Remember all those hot sweltering days of summer? So often we forget what a friend our Window Air Conditioners are to us while we cool off from the humidity and heat of summer. Take care of your good old buddy so things will be ship shape for the next hot weather season. Here are some tips to make your investment in a window air conditioner last for many seasons.

The number one best thing you can do is to remove it from the wall or window and store it indoors during the harsh weather of the winter season. Another great benefit of moving it indoors is that now you have the opportunity to clean it.

Now is a great time to inspect mounting brackets or wall sleeves for rust, breaks and caulking/insulation. These openings may need to be covered for the winter season. Some manufacturers offer options of selling cover plates for through the wall air conditioners, these covers slide in the sleeves in the front and/or back and seal the sleeve for the winter. Another option is too cut a piece of plywood to screw into the opening and seal that with insulation/foam for the winter. Make sure there is no place for rain or snow to collect avoiding water leaking down a wall. For window air conditioners some companies sell vinyl covers that protect the outside of the unit against cold weather.

Now for the task of cleaning your air conditioner, if possible remove grilles from inside and outside of the unit. You can use a brush and warm water to clean away dirt and debris from these items. Give your air filter one last good cleaning. Use the same brush and warm water to clean the coils and the fan, Keeping these clean extends the life of your compressor and keeps you cool when you need it.

5 Ways to Effectively Heat Your Space This Winter Season

So, instead, apply tape designed for heated applications or a mastic, then, walk through and check the joints of your ducts to see if you can feel any hot hair escaping. 2.) Check those small openings. If you have some heat leaks around a garden faucet, a dryer vent, or another small space, use some sealing putty to keep warm air in and cold air out. Bigger is NOT Better!

Many times we are involved in discussions with our customers concerning air conditioner btuh sizing. We hear the phrase " I want the biggest Air conditioner available, it is HOT!".

Believe it it or not bigger is not better, you have to remember that air conditioners not only cool, they also act as a dehumidifier. If you place an air conditioner into service and it has more btuh power than is actually needed your air conditioner will not take long to cool your area thus causing it to short cycle. If the air conditioner short cycles it will not take the proper amount of moisture out of the air thus causing moisture and mildew problems. So remember Bigger is NOT Better!

That being said, How do you know what the proper BTU size that is needed? There are many charts out there to look at and if you want a perfect number you can search for a company that will do a very professional job for you. However we use a basic calculation of 30 BTU's needed per square foot times the square footage of the room (normal ceilings). This calculation will give you a good idea of the BTU size needed for your home.

For example let's say you have a room that is 14' by 20' and you want to calculate the right btu size you would simply multiply 14 x 20 x 30 or 8,400 btu's.
